Torphins is a single stream Primary 1 to Primary 7, with a 20-place nursery on site. We are situated 25 miles West of Aberdeen. At the start of the 24/25 session the school has 157 pupils and 20 nursery pupils. Our catchment includes the village of Torphins and the surrounding area. Most children join our school after attending our Nursery, Torphins Playgroup or Sunshine nursery, although we have a significant proportion of pupils who join us from outside our catchment area, largely due to the availability of before and after-school care. Pupils from Torphins and the eight other primaries in the cluster join Aboyne Academy after Primary 7. The Aboyne cluster is the largest geographically in Aberdeenshire.
We value opportunities to apply skills we have learned in school. Strong partnerships with local charities and organisations, local businesses and opportunities for participation in pupil groups help to facilitate this.
Our pupil groups are actively involved in decision-making and generating new ideas and initiatives for the school. This year we are expanding the membership of these groups to allow greater participation and a broader range of voices to be heard.
We are well supported by our Active Schools coordinator, allowing us to provide pupils with opportunities to try a range of sports such as golf and rugby, along with after-school activities such as athletics, running, netball and cheerleading clubs
Local businesses generously support the school through donating time, resources or expertise. This has helped us begin to develop pupils’ awareness of the skills required for success in the world of work. We also have strong relationships with the Bread of Life charity, the Mid-Deeside Church and the Alexander Davie Trust who all provide support to the school and families. Our links with Cromar Future Group and TechFest allow us to provide exciting Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths opportunities for our pupils.
Partnerships with parents are important to the current successes at Torphins. We have an active Parent Council and Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A) sub-committee who play a key role in supporting the work of the school, advising on improvement priorities, providing feedback on initiatives and raising funds. Parents are heavily involved in organising events and clubs that promote and strengthen the role of the school as a hub within our community.
