During the 22-23 session staff developed a toolkit to support the delivery of High-Quality Learning and Teaching. We used research and input from a range of experts within Education, alongside support from Aberdeenshire Council officers to form this position statement. This was initially shared with the wider school community in September 23, and was updated during the 23-24 session to include our school Values, and how they shape our learning and teaching.- We use this toolkit as a framework for self-evaluation and quality assurance activities within school, and to support ongoing improvement.
Pupils' ability to make connection across all curricular areas is a vital skill and deepens understanding. During the 22-23 session we looked at our curriculum and recognised that the existing approach to 'topics' or 'projects' didn't support this as effectively as we would want. A small group of staff looked into a range of approaches to developing cross-curricular or interdisciplinary working, using best-practice examples from across Scotland and beyond. We now identify 'Worlds' that allow us to make linkages across the curriculum, grouping experiences and outcomes from different curricular areas that fit with the main theme. We cover all the experiences and outcomes across all curricular areas in a three-year period (the time it takes most children to work through a 'level'). This is through a combination of Interdisciplinary learning and discrete learning - maths/numeracy, some aspects of Literacy, some aspects of Health and Wellbeing, Modern Languages and Religious and Moral Education.
While the focus across the school is on one or two 'Worlds' per term, this is done at a level that is age and stage appropriate. For each 'World', staff come up with a suitably open-ended 'big question', which all learners should be able to answer by the end of the block. Pupils then shape the focus of the theme in each class with their own questions and have increasing freedom on how their learning is demonstrated.
This approach also allows us to respond to relevant world or local events, providing flexibility and making themes more engaging for pupils. Staff planning learning collaboratively at each level helps us demonstrate progression. During the 24-25 session we are working through our second full year of 'Worlds'
